The tabletop, a masterpiece of precious stones and gold inlay, rose less than two feet off the polished floor.
Illya, sitting cross-legged on a silk cushion, contemplated bowls of fried insects and … something smelling of rotten eggs. “Seriously, Napoleon, your idea of being an adventurous eater is Beef Bourguignon and Cherries Jubilee. You should expand your culinary horizons.”
“I like my horizons where they are, thanks.”
“Our host surpassed himself to provide this abundant feast. It would be rude to refuse his hospitality.”
“Says the man who’s never rude?”
“Never to someone who disposed of an entire satrapy for us.”
